Florida Family Wracked By Drunk Driver

fizzy-drink-1442694-mOne Florida family is lucky to be alive after a drunk driver crashed into their car as they were leaving a “Movies in the Park” event in Clay County. According to a report by News 4 Jax, the driver—a sixth-grade school teacher—was with her two children, her pregnant sister, and her nephew when a drunk driver ran a red light and slammed into their car.

Everyone in the car was seriously injured. The driver suffered a broken pelvis, a sacral fracture, and severe brain swelling. Evidently, the drunk driver hit her car directly where she was sitting. Doctors told her they are not sure how she survived the accident.

Her pregnant sister initially thought she had lost the baby, but doctors were able to deliver her son a full 11 weeks early. He was three pounds at birth.

The driver’s two children also suffered serious injuries. Her youngest, who was four years old at the time, was initially paralyzed after the accident and has only recently started walking again. Her 17-year-old son suffered a broken leg after it was pinned underneath his mother’s seat. In the wake of the accident, the 17-year-old has started an online fundraiser to help pay for the family’s medical bills and to raise awareness about drunk driving.

Drunk Driving in Florida

It doesn’t take an article like this to realize the kind of harm that drunk driving can cause. This article only brings the issue to the forefront, reminding us how serious accidents can be and the effect they can have on a family. Luckily, no one was killed in this accident. However, each day there are hundreds of drunk driving accidents across the country, many of which have facts similar to—or worse than—the ones described above.

Despite the obvious dangers, people continue to drink and drive, putting their fellow motorists at extreme risk. Thankfully, Florida law permits those injured in a drunk driving accident to recover for their injuries from the person who caused the accident. And in the case of a drunk driving accident, it is not usually difficult to persuade a jury to find the defendant liable for the damages he or she caused.

Have You Been Injured in a Florida Drunk Driving Accident?

If you or a loved one has recently been injured in a Florida drunk driving accident, you may be entitled to monetary compensation for your injuries or loss.
